While the number of sightings has dipped in recent years, a creature known as the San Clemente Sea Serpent used to frequent the waters between the Santa Catalina and San Clemente islands of the coast of California. Sightings were most common in the early 20th century.

The San Clemente Sea Serpent looks like a plesiosaur, with a neck 10 feet long and 6 feet wide, and has a body larger than a whale's. It has a mane of coarse hair, and bulging, foot-wide eyes.
Theories/Explanations/[]
The most popular theory is that the San Clemente Sea Serpent is a living plesiosaur. However, the comparatively wide neck leads some people to believe it is actually a living pliosaur, relatives of the plesiosaurs but with shorter necks. Another theory, supported by the presense of hair, is that the San Clemente Sea Serpent is a strange whale. It could be a southern subspecies of Cadborosaurus.
