A blatant hoax, the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus was created by a Lyle Zapato in 1998. Many people actually believe the online tales, and teachers around the country use the site the stories were created on to teach students about citing sources. Zapato gave them the scientific name Octopus paxarbolisolo.

Pacific Northwest Tree Octopi are in the Olympic National Forest. They lay their eggs in water but live their mature lives in trees, and are hunted by Bigfoot.
